Zizek Record's Digital Cumbia

Zizek or ZZK Records is a new record label out of Buenos Aires, Argentina that features all local artists. Their ability to combine traditional Argentine cumbia music and modern electronic genres with a unique and danceable rhythm is what sets them apart from other newcomers. When I heard their artists for the first time, I was blown away. I had never heard anything like it. ZZK Records was founded in 2008 by Grant Dull who is also known by the alias of El G. Originally, Zizek was a club night in Buenos Aires that supported musicians on the ZZK label. Due to the success of their monthly all night parties and passionate fans, ZZK made the decision to expand.

All of the artists on ZZK Records live in Argentina and they have a combination of rappers, DJs, and even a live band. They call their sound ‘digital cumbia’ which they explained as a fusion of tribal cumbia, electronica, and techno. With this type of musical diversity and talent all in one organization, it’s no surprise that ZZK has been catching international press. They have run successful tours in Europe and recently finished their North American tour which stopped in NYC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland to name a few. In 2009, they were invited to Coachella, Rockslide, and SXSW festivals.

If anything is clear, it’s that Zizek shows no signs of slowing down. They recently launched Zizek TV which was created to expand knowledge of Zizek internationally all while utilizing technology as a means of expressing their creativity. ZZK has already been established as a success because many cumbia artists in Buenos Aires are never able to leave the city. Look out for ZZK Records and their artists in the future!

Just heard that Zizek will be doing a couple shows on the west coast. Its rare for them to make a US appearance.
